BT Infinity in Greenwich

(5 posts)
  1. Heavy persuasive phone salesmanship with guarantee that BT's new "Infinity" will increase internet speeds exponentially. A lot of uncertainty to be found at http://www.avforums.com/forums/bt/1195005-bt-infinity.html
Can anyone locally in Greenwich area advise whether it delivers?

As always with BT, depends how far from the exchange you are. I know someone in Woolwich who lives near the exchange who has it and thinks it's the bees knees.

If you live in east Greenwich and are served by the Maze Hill exchange, it's likely to be a wise investment since you've already got a decent connection. West Greenwich (beyond Royal Hill) might be a different matter - different exchange, further away.

Thanks Darryl. The following replies came in via Twitter:

"I use Infinity I have been very impressed"

    and

"I live in the GMV and its great. Much faster than our previous connect with Sky. Also it has the added bonus of BT FON"

and then BT Infinity's own Twitter account replies:

Do remember that you don't have to buy your broadband from BT Broadband to get this service. "Infinity" is just BT's branding for "Fibre to the curb" (FTTC) broadband, and any ISP should be able to deliver it for you.

A rather late reply.... A friend living near Trafalgar Rd in E Greenwich recently upgraded to Infinity. ThinkBroadband's speed test gave 33.2/1.6 upload/download on Infinity. On the old system download was 8.5. Speeds would probably vary though the day of course. The connection modem<->computer is by ethernet cable; wireless is likely to be slower.

As GORN61 says, other ISP's can use the same system. Their speeds may not be the same, depending on their contention ratios (number users sharing a line) and other factors.
