Star of A Room With A View, The Killing Fields and even Smallville, towering thespian Julian Sands is shedding his slightly austere image to pay a personal tribute to the late Harold Pinter in a new show heading to Greenwich Theatre.
He talks to Matthew Jenkin about A Celebration of Harold Pinter, his memories of the playwright and being directed by Hollywood legend and long-time friend John Malkovich.
TALL, blond and with a reputation for playing fiercely serious roles on both the big and small screens, British thespian and Hollywood star Julian Sands is showing his softer side in A Celebration of Harold Pinter.
Directed and co-created by Sands' fellow Killing Fields star and film legend John Malkovich, the show, which will play Greenwich Theatre on September 13 and September 14, started life in 2005 when the late acclaimed playwright Pinter asked the Room With A View actor to read his poetry at a benefit in St Stephen Walbrook Church in London.
After Malkovich heard Sands doing the reading again as a memorial after Pinter’s death, the pair decided to develop the show together as a fitting tribute to the writer whose work had made such a deep impression on both actors.
