Well, here we go again. Contrary to local peoples wishes and 11 objections of nearby residents our local councillors have approved a planning application by the Somali Refugee Action Group (SORAG) to relocate their offices to The Blue Building, 107 Woolwich Road, SE10 (dated 17/03/10).
Before you start shouting either racism or nimbyism there are valid and real concerns for those of us who live next door to the offices. Firstly, there isn't a Somali population in Greenwich. Nope, I've been here over 40 years and can quite categorically state that the Somali population is based in Woolwich. So why put an information unit in Greenwich? Secondly, complaints against the last SORAG office ranged from impromptu barbeques within the grounds, noise, spitting and general unsocial behaviour. In summary, the office was an impromptu social hub used at all times of day and evening.
No point crying over spilled milk as the councillors have done their worst. I dare say they will turn up to the opening and enjoy a glass of (non alcoholic) refreshment to celebrate but I wonder where they will be if the same problems materialize in and around The Blue Building in the coming months.
