The Blue Building & SORAG

Well, here we go again. Contrary to local peoples wishes and 11 objections of nearby residents our local councillors have approved a planning application by the Somali Refugee Action Group (SORAG) to relocate their offices to The Blue Building, 107 Woolwich Road, SE10 (dated 17/03/10).

Before you start shouting either racism or nimbyism there are valid and real concerns for those of us who live next door to the offices. Firstly, there isn't a Somali population in Greenwich. Nope, I've been here over 40 years and can quite categorically state that the Somali population is based in Woolwich. So why put an information unit in Greenwich? Secondly, complaints against the last SORAG office ranged from impromptu barbeques within the grounds, noise, spitting and general unsocial behaviour. In summary, the office was an impromptu social hub used at all times of day and evening.

No point crying over spilled milk as the councillors have done their worst. I dare say they will turn up to the opening and enjoy a glass of (non alcoholic) refreshment to celebrate but I wonder where they will be if the same problems materialize in and around The Blue Building in the coming months.

I am probably a bit silly trying to reply to this without more information about what is going on. So, this comment is from memory and in no way is it official.
The planning consent for the ground floor of the Blue Building was for change of use class orders from child care to office - and - I think - health related uses (but you would need the proper detail from the planners). I also think I remember that the owner was asked at the meeting if he had an occupant in mind and he said, that a community organisation had been interested but now had premises elsewhere and that he was looking for someone different.
So - I would be grateful to know more.

and - by the way - nuisance needs to be dealt with, whoever it is caused by.

I did email SORAG a couple of days ago asking if they could confirm if they were planning to move to the Blue Building but haven't had a response yet.
