Dear Dr. Mills,

I read your article some time back and I was most interested as I am in the process of fundraising to build an interactive-educational museum at the the telegraph field in Valentia Island, Co. Kerry in Ireland. At this site Queen Victoria's message was sent to President Buchanon on August 28th 1858. Communications continued for a further 2 weeks with little success as messages were unclear etc. The engineer in charge increased the current thinking this would rectify the anomalies however the cable was burned out and as you know the successful cable was laid in 1866 and so global communications between the old and new worlds began.

Best Regards

Junior Browne

I still find it fascinating that 150 years ago we were able to communicate across the Atlantic and that the principle of sending data across oceans , via a cable , remains today.

As a local and part of Alcatel-Lucent I am extremely proud of the past achievements of the company and , even more so now , to be part of it.

We have revolutionised the way that people live , work and communicate and with greater technological demands being placed on us we continue to do so , even today.

A very interesting article.

I wonder if Dr Mary Mills/ Richard Buchanan might be interested in giving a short talk on our local industrial history.
