Daily Photo: 01/02/2012 – New Royal Greenwich street signs

February 1, 2012 By Rob Powell

Thanks to local estate agents Conran Estates for sharing this photo showing the brand new street sign for Greenwich High Road withthe new coat of arms on it. The council has started putting new signs out around the borough as it readies itself for Royal borough status on Friday.

Here’s another one, thanks to Alex Brooks:

Don’t forget there will be activities in Woolwich on Friday, in Eltham on Saturday and in Greenwich on Sunday to mark the occasion.

Don’t want to carp, as the others I’ve seen have looked okay, but doesn’t it look a bit cheap and nasty like that? If “HIGH” was on the second line, you wouldn’t have all that ugly white space and the sign might have been smaller and cheaper.

well spotted darryl – what a shit piece of ‘design’, layout, whatever…

A ‘Widow’ is what all that white space is called.

As any layout person will tell you, they’re to be avoided at all costs — you can see why!

Must admit, the Creek Road sign looks nice.

Do you think they’re doing the roads next to the Unroyal Borough of Lewisham on purpose??…..

    Yeah – why not rub their noses in it :-}

    Two questions/concerns:

    1. Is replacing street signs, simply to get the word ‘Royal’ in, really the best use of the Council’s budget in these straitened times? I personally would prefer that money to go into the libraries budget, for example.

    2. I trust that the Council have the aesthetic sense and respect for local history to leave untouched the remaining vintage, solid steel, hand-painted signs that you still find dotted around the Borough. Oh, wait…

And now I will bet that all the Councillors have now got their business cards reprinted with ‘Royal Borough of Greenwich’ too.

It’s an important detail, but one which would have provided sufficient funds for one, two, three or maybe four marginally homeless individuals to get a kickstart on new housing.

Goodness only knows how many people could be housed by the cost of new ‘Royal Borough’ street signage.

Shame on the Councillors for their Royal indulgence.

Does anyone know what happens to the old street signs ? Are they sold for scrap metal or given to councillors as another freebie ? Would love to buy one !!

Good call Mazer! I will have one!

Or at the very least they could give/sell them to the sign stall at Clocktower Market where we got our street signs for our place.

Also, very pleased to see the old street signs on houses on Greenwich High Road are still there. :-).
