Cutty Sark

Think of Greenwich and it’s almost impossible not to think of the Cutty Sark. This impressive tea clipper ship was built in 1869 and served as a merchant vessel. She has been preserved in dry dock in Greenwich since 1959, and is a must see for any visitor.

The Cutty Sark also has a starring role in each year’s London Marathon, and it’s always great to see the athletes run around it.

The Cutty Sark is undergoing extensive repairs now, following a fire which took hold in May 2007, which occured actually in the middle of ongoing works on its preservation. The fire was a potentially lethal blow to the historic ship, but luckily progress does seem possible, and in June 2008, Israel shipping magnate Sammy Ofer donated £3.3 million which was urgently needed to finish the restoration project.
