Greenwich Market closed early today after an object fell through the market roof, hit a market stall and rebounded onto a shopper.
On a day when strong weather conditions caused incidents around the south east, heavy winds dislodged the object – we’re not sure what it was yet – which then fell through the roof of the market.
The shopper who was struck by the falling object had no visible injuries but was taken to hospital as a precaution. The market closed early so that fire officers could attend the scene and ensure it was safe. A full repair of the affected roof section is expected to be undertaken on Monday.
A spokesman for Urban Space, the company that manages Greenwich Market, told Greenwich.co.uk this evening: “The market will be open as usual tomorrow (Sunday) but a small section of the market will be closed that is beneath the section of roof that was damaged to make absolutely sure that customers are safe and our traders products remain dry!”.
Thanks for getting the real story on this, Rob. My source was rather vague and over-dramatic!
Hi – many thanks for alerting me to it in the first place 🙂
I was there on saturday when the incident happened. It was very scary as it missed me by inches and i had glass on my coat. A young man in his teens had glass in his hair and i told him to get himself checked out.
Typical health and safety lunacy. I got turfed out of the market on Saturday for (apparently) no good reason at all.
Fair play, someone gets a bump to the head, take them to hospital. But two ambulances, an NHS doctor and a fire engine? Please!
Any further clues what the object was yet? Sarah was apparently there but doesn’t say what she saw…
there was a good reason, ,aybe if you witnessed what happened you would not think it was health and safety lunacy, it was very frightening
It was not lunacy, i was there when the incident happened and narrowly missed being injured myself. It was very frightening
It was a very large block of heavy material, dark coloured about 6 feet square, i got out of there quick as i was so shocked, the noise was also very loud.
