Reclaim your stolen jewellery at Precious Items Fair

January 13, 2010 By Rob Powell

The Metropolitan Police is holding a Precious Items Fair this Saturday to reunite local victims of robbery with their stolen jewellery.

The jewellery was all stolen from addresses in SE3 in a string of burglaries between January and September 2008.

Police say that the recovered items range from Tiffany necklaces, to broaches, bracelets, earrings, expensive pens and even include a trombone.

The items will be on display at the fair which is being held in the church hall of St Michaels’s and All Angels this coming Saturday (16th) between 1-6pm.

An officer from the Blackheath Safer Neighbourhoods Team, said: “We are looking for people who live specifically in the SE3 area and that have been burgled between May and September 2008. Some of the items we have recovered are very unique and we would be delighted to give them back to their original owners.

“We know that some of those are very expensive but we are also aware that some of them might have high sentimental value. We would strongly encourage locals who have been burgled to attend the fair.”

Minister for London Hosts Crime Discussion in Kidbrooke

July 31, 2009 By Rob Powell

Tessa Jowell

Minister for London, Tessa Jowell, visited the Samuel Montagu Youth Centre, SE3, on Tuesday to take part in a discussion about crime in the borough.

The meeting was attended by 60 young people from the area, Police, Councillors, Government Office for London staff, Youth Programmes Workers and Greenwich Area Youth Forum members. It formed part of a roadshow of events to highlight a new package of measures by the Government under the title “Building Britain’s Future“.

Tessa Jowell, said: “Building Britain’s Future is about talking to local people about the big issues facing the country today. It is about every part of government becoming more accountable and responsive to people’s needs in the current economic climate.

At yesterday’s event, local young people told me what more they think the Government should do to keep their neighbourhood safe. I will ensure that these views and ideas are heard by colleagues across central Government.”

An Uninvited Guest

May 5, 2009 By Rob Powell

The Number 16 B&B in St Alfege’s Passage had an uninvited guest on Saturday night, when owner Robert Gray awoke to find an intruder in his bedroom.

A fight ensued and Robert managed to repel the intruder from the property. He made his escape into St Alfege Church recreation garden.

Robert, who is well known around Greenwich and was selected by BBC London to be one of their Voices of Greenwich, was left shaken by the break in. He describes the intruder as being in his “mid to late 20s, black with short neat hair wearing clean jeans and dark blue top”.

Andrew Gilligan: Is Greenwich Safe?

April 1, 2009 By Andrew Gilligan

AFTER a local man was murdered in the town centre last week, the question is inevitably being asked: is Greenwich safe?

25-year-old Paul Martin, from Blackheath, never got to see the first day of summer time. He died from loss of blood after being stabbed near St Alfege’s Church in the early hours of Sunday. Two men have been arrested.

Paul’s is among a number of recent stabbings in the area. Three weeks ago, a man named Sunny Eze was found knifed to death in his Shooters Hill flat. There were two non-fatal stabbings in the Westcombe Park area in January, and three at the 02 in November. Those were only the ones that made the news. A little beyond the borough, the high-profile murders of Jimmy Mizen in Lee and Rob Knox in Sidcup have just been through the courts.

“We are so afraid to go out,” said Nichola, one commenter on this site. “We really think the police should have more patrols around the area to show the public they are around…We are not safe any more.”

Are Nichola and others right to be afraid? Is central Greenwich a dangerous place? A first look at the crime statistics would suggest that, at least relatively, it is. In the year to February, in Greenwich West, the council ward that covers the town centre, there were 45.5 offences of violence against the person per thousand inhabitants.

That is 50 per cent higher than the average for the borough as a whole, and 94 per cent higher than the London average. The actual number of violent offences in this relatively small area last year was around 500, or ten a week.

But of course a statistic based on crimes per thousand residents can be misleading. One of the reasons why central Greenwich has higher numbers of violent crimes is that it has more visitors. It’s a tourist hub. It’s the main nightlife centre of the borough, with 26 pubs or bars within half a mile of the church where Paul was stabbed.

Many of the victims of those crimes of violence will be visitors. The high violent crime rate doesn’t necessarily mean that residents of central Greenwich are at greater risk than people in any other part of the borough. If all our visitors were added in, the violent crime rate per thousand people “present in central Greenwich” might well be closer to the borough average.

We can compare central Greenwich to other heavily-trafficked nightlife hubs – that’s a possibly fair comparison, because their figures will suffer the same distortion as ours (although even here the comparison may be skewed by differing numbers of visitors.) The comparison, as far as it goes, is relatively encouraging.

Kingston town centre’s rate of violence against the person is 87.6 per thousand, nearly double ours. Croydon town centre’s is 70.6. Romford’s is 63.3. Even Bromley’s, at 53 per thousand, is slightly higher than Greenwich. The ward covering the main West End nightlife area around Leicester Square has a rate of 241 violent crimes per thousand residents – though it does, of course, get far more visitors than any suburban town centre.

Violent crime in central Greenwich hasn’t increased over the last year; it is more or less exactly the same. Violence in the borough as a whole spiked dramatically in 2004. Since then, it has fallen gradually back to its pre-2004 level.

These are, I know, police reported crime figures – about which there is a great deal of scepticism, much of it justified. They will not reassure many people who feel scared. Nor, in any case, do they say that Greenwich is a demi-paradise of peace and order. Closing time on a Saturday night is probably a moment to avoid. I can’t recall ever seeing a police officer at that time, and we could certainly do with some. There’s what’s billed as a “police surgery” at West Greenwich House, on the High Road, at 6pm tonight where anyone is welcome to turn up and raise their concerns.

But on the evidence of the figures, at least, it doesn’t look like the problem has got any worse, whatever the recent spate of high-profile incidents may suggest.

New Bike Shop Suffers Break In

March 25, 2009 By Rob Powell

Rather depressingly, the new branch of Cycles UK in Creek Road has suffered a break in before it has even opened for business. The store has reported on its dedicated blog that thieves got into the shop last Thursday evening and stole eight bikes.

The bikes stolen were:

  • 2009 Specialized Stumpjumper FSR Comp Medium
  • 2009 Specialized FSR XC Comp Medium
  • 2009 Specialized Stumpjumper HT Expert Carbon 19″
  • 2009 Specialized Langster 56cm
  • 2009 Cube Reaction XT 18″
  • 2009 Wilier La Triestina Mirage Large
  • Mezzo D10
  • Mezzo D9

If you hear of anyone trying to sell these bikes in the area, you might want to let the police know. The robbery hasn’t affected their schedule though and the new shop should be open on April 4th.

February 21, 2009 By Rob Powell

An apparently random shooting took place outside the North Pole pub in Greenwich High Road last night.

The attacker was then driven away from the scene and police were alerted at around 02:40.

Witnesses or anyone that can provide information relating to this should contact Greenwich Police on 0300 123 1212.

Update 24/02/09
A man has been arrested and remanded in prison in connection with this. 28 year old Thomas Scott from Plumstead was charged with grievous bodily harm, possessing a firearm with intent to endanger life, and also possessing a banned weapon.
