Monkey: Journey To the West at the O2

November 13, 2008 By Rob Powell

Remember Monkey? The cult Japanese show made a reappearance on our screens this Summer when the characters were used in the BBC’s Olympics coverage. The story of the show was based on a famous Chinese book from the 16th century called Journey To The West.

This vibrant new opera is an adaption of that story by Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett, who previously collaborated on the Gorillaz concept band. This dazzling spectacle brings together traditional disciplines – acrobatics, singing, dancing – with modern technology including animation and video projections.

It’s being performed in a purpose built tent at the O2 complex in North Greenwich, and even features a Monkey themed restaurant. It runs until December 5th and tickets are available from Ticketmaster.
