Nightmare Journey on the DLR

February 3, 2009 By Rob Powell

Occasional commenter Tom emailed me his account of a nightmare journey back to work on the DLR today after yesterday’s “extra bank holiday”.

“I can’t move in any more there is no ROOM. Get the next train!”

“I cant wait , 3 trains I let go already”

“Wait till the next one then”

“No!”

“stop shoving!”

“I have to get on and get to work….”

“Ok then just get on and shut up!”

“Thats not very nice , thats very rude”

“Well i thought it was rude when you pushed and shoved at my wife..”

Later on at Limehouse I shouted out for people to just walk the lazy b’stards, then realised it was quite a way to Bank from there! I felt silly but luckily I had looked stern enough to carry it off. People generally don’t answer back – this wasn’t in Lewisham, after all!

A woman kept saying “Chadwell” on the phone explaining to her boss, and she was corrected by irritated passengers and told to say Shadwell!

All in all i wanted to turn animal and fight my way off and on to the tracks, I’d have done it too but i feared loads would have fallen off with me!

Horrifc journey. The train kept stopping. It was 1hr 10 mins of debauchery!

Thanks Tom. Quite a vivid description of what sounds like a nightmare journey! Did you use the DLR this morning? How was it for you? Were you on the same train as Tom when he called you all lazy for not walking from Limehouse? Wwre you the lady on the phone who was calling it Chadwell?

Snowy Greenwich Videos from Youtube

February 2, 2009 By Rob Powell

With lots of workers and school children enjoying an extra day off thanks to the snowfall, families descended on Greenwich Park for sledding and other snow based fun. Here’s some videos captured today and posted on Youtube which give a flavour of a busy Greenwich Park.

Families sledding in Greenwich Park

“Kamikaze going down the hill” – watch out for someone falling over at about 23 seconds.

Snowman Destroyer – Take a good look at the snowman at the start of this video. Someone’s about to destroy it. See how many people are in the background!

Severe Weather in Greenwich

February 2, 2009 By Rob Powell

The great thing about this snow is that it makes for some lovely pictures. The flip side of this though is that it affects people’s ability to get around safely, get to work or to the shops, or to access important services.

Greenwich Council has implemented its pre-organised “Snow Plans”, which means some council run services such as rubbish collection and general passenger services have been suspended. Meals on wheels deliveries will be made as normal.

Most schools are closed, and listen to local radio to find out if they will be open tomorrow. More heavy snow is predicted so the advice is not to travel unless you really have to. South Eastern has suspended services in and out of London.

Councillor Chris Roberts, Leader of Greenwich Council, said: “Greenwich Council is making every effort to keep vital services running and I am very pleased we are able to say we have got staff out and about to ensure the elderly and vulnerable are being looked after as normal. We urge people to stay indoors and keep listening to local news reports for the latest advice. We will be issuing updates as and when we have them”.

Daily Photo 02/02/09: Greenwich Under Snow Special Edition!

February 2, 2009 By Rob Powell

It’s apparently the best/worst (depending on how you see the cold, white stuff) snowfall we’ve had for years, and there’s some cracking pictures of Greenwich under snow on Flickr. So with kind permission, here’s a selection of pictures of snowy Greenwich today…

Here’s a gorgeous one of the park from Tracy’s photostream (TG&BB)

And this was the scene up Maze Hill as caught on Tamsin’sphotostream

UPDATED- DaveH48 captures the scene very nicely looking up Old Woolwich Road with the ORNC in the background.

Did you get a cool picture of Greenwich in the snow? Send it or a flickr link to rob@greenwich.co.uk or post a link in the comments below!

Stockwell Street Development "Off"

January 28, 2009 By Rob Powell

Following on from the rumours that the , it seems that Docklands 24 has managed to find out more about this and is reporting that the owners, Capital and Counties Ltd, have cancelled the planned development for the site which included flats, shops and offices. It confirms that C&C are also considering selling the site.

Have a look at the article yourself – it mentions the University of Greenwich as possible buyers but also raises the interesting scenario of Greenwich Market relocating to the site whilst its own planned works take place.

If you want to catch the Dancing On Ice action live, then you’ll be able to see it all at the O2 Arena on the 28th and 29th April.

DANCING ON ICE LIVE TOUR TICKETS – 28/04/09
DANCING ON ICE LIVE TOUR TICKETS – 29/04/09

If your visiting from out of town, your nearest hotel for the O2 is the Greenwich Express by Holiday Inn.
