Daily Photo: 20/06/2011 – Robert’s Full English Breakfast

June 20, 2011 By Rob Powell

Robert Gray interviewing Rev Chris Moody

I caught up with Robert Gray earlier on as he interviewed Rev Chris Moody from St Alfege Church for his new internet based chat show which will be called “Robert Gray’s Full English Breakfast Show”. Rev Moody, who was celebrating his birthday (happy birthday!) spoke to Robert about the plans that St Alfege has in 2012.

The filming of the interview was itself filmed by BBC London’s Ian Ramsdale who was there to get footage for his interesting 2012 Lives work. This is a photograph of the filming of the filming.

The interview with Rev Moody should be appearing on YouTube sometime in the next couple of weeks.

Daily Photo: 13/06/2011 – 1711 Walk

June 13, 2011 By Rob Powell

Thanks to Neil Rhind for this photo from Sunday’s 1711 walk, which I mentioned in Friday’s Daily Photo.

Neil writes:

Rev Christopher Moody, Vicar of St Alfege, Greenwich, gives his every blessing on Peter Dodge and his stalwart long-distance walking team. They intend to visit 12 of the surviving churches, built as a result of the 1711 50 New Churches Act, seventeen and a half miles later. They started at St Alfege, and intend to finish (rain notwithstanding) at St John’s Smith Square, encompassing inter alia, St Ann, Limehouse and St George’s, Bloomsbury. This special event marks exactly the date that the Act was given assent by Queen Anne: 12 June 1711.

Daily Photo: 10/06/2011 – Open Gardens

June 10, 2011 By Rob Powell

Here’s a photo from one of the gardens that will be open to the public as part of the St Alfege Open Gardens restoration appeal.

A number of gardens are opening up this Saturday, with a different selection throwing open their back-doors the following week.

St Alfege will also be the starting point for the 1711 walk this Sunday morning. It’s been described as a “Pop-Up Baroque Church Crawl: a 17¼ mile walking route linking 12 of London’s finest Baroque churches (or, one case, its ruins).”

The event marks the tricentennial of the 1711 Act for Building Fifty New Churches. The walk starts at 9am and some participants will be wearing 18th century costumes.

Daily Photo: 08/06/2011 – One more of The World

June 8, 2011 By Rob Powell

'The World' in Greenwch, London

I hadn’t planned to use any more photos of The World, but then Warren King sent me this fantastic photo that he took yesterday and I had to give him the last world on the matter – he even supplied the pun to go with the photo!

If all these pictures of the ship which I have affectionately labelled the Ferry Estate have got a bit out of hand and you’re itching for a change of view on the Daily Photo, this song might be appropriate.

The World at Greenwich

The huge cruise ship, MS The World, arrived at Greenwich Reach on Friday.

The World is a “residence at sea” comprising of 165 apartments, allowing the super rich to see the world from the comfort of a floating block of flats. According to Wikipedia, in 2010 a studio apartment on board would have cost $600,000 and a two bedroom apartment just short of $3,000,000.

Residents of the ocean-faring housing estate – let’s call it the Ferry Estate – have decanted from their plush homes onto dry land to sample the best that London has to offer.

The end of the World’s visit to Greenwich will be on Wednesday, when those wealthy enough, and lucky enough, to call this imposing ship home will set sail for the next stop on their itinerary: Newcastle!

Daily Photo: 02/06/2011 – Temperamentals

June 2, 2011 By Rob Powell

Thanks to Warren King for this photo of Brian Paddick and Boy George outside Greenwich Theatre. The two appeared in an on-stage discussion after the performance of The Temperamentals.

Warren comments, “I nearly messed it up when Boy George turned up and stormed inside after I ‘papped’ him getting out of the cab. After some persuasion he came out for the publicity shots. I apologised and he was very accommodating. Happy ending!”
