Thanks to Nisha for this lovely photo taken in Greenwich Park.
Daily Photo: 19/04/2011 – John Humphries House
The deep blue sky on this sunny day almost matched the blue panels at the front of John Humphries House in Stockwell Street.
The 60s office building will soon be demolished to make way for the University of Greenwich’s purpose built School of Architecture and Construction.
Did you take a photo in Greenwich during today’s scorching weather? All contributions welcome – rob@greenwich.co.uk
Daily Photo: 15/04/2011 – Pearly King
Thanks to Indigo for this photo taken last weekend.
Daily Photo: 12/04/2011 – Geyser at Peninsula Square
Thanks to Warren King for this rather fabulous photo of a geyser near the entrance to the O2.
According to the designers, the “narrative” is that “perhaps these geysers existed even before the Dome was built, and therefore the grilles were a mechanical attempt to restrain them.”
Daily Photo: 11/04/2011 – Greenwich Park
Thanks to local tennis coach, Gerard Chaustow, for sending me this photo he took in Greenwich Park at the weekend.
Daily Photo: 06/04/2011 – Google’s Prime Meridian
Today’s Daily Photo is a screenshot taken from Google Earth – the desktop application that offers you ”the world’s geographical information at your fingertips”.
As everyone knows, the Prime Meridian goes right through the Royal Observatory in Greenwich Park and some people actually pay £10 to go and stand by it. Next door to the Observatory, the Meridian is also marked by a line which goes through one of the tennis courts.
But Greenwich.co.uk reader Alwyne has spotted that the Prime Meridian as shown on Google Earth is some way out – over 100m, he reckons.
Alwyne is correct in his estimate – it’s actually 102.5 metres east of Prime Meridian. The reason for this, apparently, is that that is where the World Geodetic System 1984 which is used by GPS satellites records the WGS84 meridian as being. For a better explanation than I could possibly muster of why this is, read on here.
Daily Photo: 04/04/2011 – Greenwich Sunset
Thanks to Jackie Smith for sending me gorgeous photo that was taken on Saturday.
Daily Photo: 30/03/2011 – NMM’s new wing
Thanks to Gordon for sending me this today – workers were removing some of the boards as he walked past which allowed him to get this photo of the National Maritime Musuem’s new Sammy Ofer Wing. The new wing is expected to open this Summer.
Daily Photo: 25/03/2011 – Garden Bird
Thanks to Frank for sending me this photo of a pheasant that was in his West Greenwich garden recently.
Daily Photo: 21/03/2011 – More HMS Bulwark
HMS Bulwark leaves Greenwich today but here’s a final look at her before she goes with some of the pictures I’ve taken and have been sent.
Thanks to Alan who took this one from aboard City Cruises’ M.V. Millennium Time
Thanks to Greenwich West councillor, Matthew Pennycook, for this lovely picture he took on Saturday afternoon
And thanks to Dazza for this photo taken round by the Trafalgar Tavern…
UPDATE
Thanks again to Dazza for more great pics of HMS Bulwark as she made her way back out to sea this afternoon. Check out more of his photos on Flickr.
