HMS Bulwark shows spectators her capabilities

March 17, 2011 By Rob Powell

HMS Bulwark 009

Spectators in Greenwich looked on this morning as HMS Bulwark put on a demonstration of her varied capabilities.

The amphibious assault warship arrived at Greenwich Reach yesterday having recently rejoined the fleet after an eight month refit.

This morning's demonstration, on and above the Thames, allowed the Royal Navy to illustrate the warship's versatility alongside a number of boats and helicopters.

HMS Bulwark’s Commanding Officer, Captain Alex Burton, said:

“HMS Bulwark is the country’s very own Swiss Army Knife. Totally indispensable and phenomenally versatile, she packs a punch with our embarked group of Royal Marines and delivers proven essential support to the softer humanitarian and disaster relief operations."

HMS Bulwark will be moored at Greenwich until Monday.

    Carl,
What are you talking about? We did not get rid of the Ark Royal for Bulwark. Two completely different ships with different roles. Still, it was madness getting rid of the Ark Royal

    Derek,
The Bulwark carries the pennant number L51. All RN ships have a pennant number, Frigates start with an F Destroyers with a D, HMS Bulwark being a Landing ship begins with an L. For some reason Aircraft Carriers have pennant numbers begining with R. Hope this helps

    Carl…what an idiot you are!

wasnt it Liebour who ordered AirCraft carriers which couldnt take……AIRCRAFT!!!!

Think you will find it was that kind of intellect and Geoff Hoon, Bliar and Brown who help destroy the armed forces and we should be proud of what we have and what we can have now those clowns have gone!

Show some respect….it’s not who you are…but what you do that defines you..

Our armed forces do a great job..thats what defines them…not what they sail or fly in!

There appears to be a Chinese looking ideogram on the Bulwark’s funnel. Can anyone clarify and explain. Thank you

Would like to wave her goodbye tomorow, does anyone know departure time or is that classified?

The “chinese ideogram” is in fact the insignia of the combined operations forces. It comprises a square fluked anchor and superimposed on it outspread eagles wings and a light machine gun. It stemms from the insignia developed during the WW2 for combined ops forces and is curre ntly in use for comandos.

As to departure high tide is at 1440. so she should slip with tugs around that time.

hey everyone, i serve onboard HMS Bulwark and i was there in march… not trying to be rude but the pennant is L15.
to the numpty slaggin the ship off we do completely different things to aircraft carriers which we showed onboard if you were that bothered… an aircraft carrier cannot deploy landing craft and house up to 500 marines which are probably a little more helpful than an aircraft carrier with no use anymore seen as though the navy no longer have the harriers… read up on facts before you say anything!

To the donut who said we are in the shit, get your facts right. I know someone on Bulwark, and it is totally different to Ark Royal, the Ark was an aircraft carrier, Bulwark is far more versatile and quick response to any eventuallity. With the likes of the new class Destroyers and the 2 new Carriers being built, alongside the exsisting fleet, the Royal Navy is still 2nd to none and respected Worldwide
