A NEW website has gone live so that Greenwich residents can plan for parking this summer during the Olympics.
Parking restrictions are to be put in place on all roads near the Olympic venues, including roads that aren’t subject to parking controls, to prevent spectators from driving to the games.
Residents with existing parking car parking permits will continue to be able to use them, but Greenwich Council’s visitor permits (pictured right) can’t be used between 27th July and 9th September.
New 2012 Games Parking visitors’ permits will have to be applied for instead, with each household being allowed to apply for two.
Any residents who currently parks a car in an area where there is no controlled parking will need to apply for a free parking permit to continue doing so throughout the summer. Paid parking bays will continue as normal throughout the Olympics.

your webb site is no help to us who need permits
Cindy Sheehan says
No wait Jim. This website worked for me. Like a lot of other people, I couldn’t find a link that worked (for Greenwich residents). I clicked on the ABOVE link (2012gamesparkingpermits.com) and it took me directly to the vehicle registration web link. I have ‘allegedly’ successfully registered our vehicles. Good luck!
Paul Webbewood says
I live in an area where there are normally no restrictions but where I will need a permit to park during the Olympics. Despite having lived at my address for over 25 years and been the registered owner of my car for six years the system has no record of me.
I have therefore had to photocopy documents and send them to an address in Sheffield so that I can officially exist and be allowed to park near my home.
PRB says
I registered the car on the 11th June 2012 by phoning through. I received the letter confirming registration on the 13th June 2012 by email. However, I have not actually recieved a permit for ‘my’ car or the two visitors permits.
Greenwich sent correspondence this week stating these would be sent within 5 days of registering, it is now 10 days. All correspondence relate only to visitors permits. Does the registered car owner also recieve a permit?
I am concerned as I started the process early in order not to get caught up in the mad rush nearer the time. My area will be a temporary CPZ within three weeks when it officially comes into force.
Anyone received their car permits yet?

I’m in the same situation as you. I registered my car on the 13th June and I have yet to receive the paper permit however have received a email confirmation of registration. Spoke to someone over the phone today to enquiry how long these should take and they couldnt not answer my question. Useless would be put it mildly.

Ive been trying to register 2 cars, for the fast that is the olympics and can not get any info for the permits.. Even went to the council and got no joy .Been trying since 11th june.
Solange says
My car is in the same boat. Registered on the 13th called 10 days later to be told not to worry permits had been sent out on the 13th……oh yeah, so why do we have them yet?…. I am curious to know if anybody has received any permit of any kind.
sishort says
What’s the problem? Went online, applied for my permit and it said application was successfully submitted.
Haven’t had the permit through yet, but surely there is no need to panic yet is there.
Emily says
Had no trouble registering our cars but the website said one was already registered which surprised me. Still waiting for the actual permits though
PRB says
I just rang LOCOG today as I have still not received any permits since registering by phone on the 11th June 2012. They have been told to tell residents that all permits will be issued before the 22nd July 2012 (the day parking comes into force). However, wait for it…residents can call back if they do not receive their permits. Of course we can, we have nothing better to do!
Well, if it has taken 16 days to date for the permit to be issued, I cannot imagine how they will cope with the thousands of people who are applying.
Usual last minute large organisation stuff, why did they not start this process in May 2012.
Al says
Same thing here. I have registered on 13th of June, shortly after received a confirmation e-mail but haven’t received permits yet(28th). There is plenty of time though, I think we will all get them on time ;).
C.F.Smith says
I have lived at my current address in Greenwich for over 10 years and my application for a visitor’s pass was initially rejected because “no record found – further identification required” – After submitting a copy of my rates demand my application was rejected.Thinking it may have been a problem from my end on the quality of the sent document I re-applied but still the same result.
In the end I rang them and was told that they were very busy due to a huge demand but eventually got it sorted out.
A hassle I could have done without and why have Greenwich left it so late to implement a system which will be still open to abuse ?
M Allen says
I applied on 15th June, sailed through the application and although I hate to admit it was rather impressed with the efficiency……however, its now 4th July and still no permit – par for the course!
mr d blunden says
Surely as everyone else in the Country has access to council records it would be much easier if you had to, surely. “”
PRB says
Well, bearing in mind that LOGOC said all permits will be issued by the 22nd July 2012, less than two weeks to go. If they have not managed to issue permits after four weeks today since I registered, I am not confident that thousands of permits will be issued to the borough within two week.
Has anyone seen sight of their permits yet?
Mr M says
No visitor parking permits for me just yet. Rang the LOCOG number (0300 111 2012) as per the pdf emailed to me when I applied back on 14th June. The guy I spoke to stated that LOCOG had sent the instructions through to the council and it was them that were delaying it.
So, I phoned the council parking dept and eventually spoke to a woman who stated that LOCOG are directing queries to the council but that actually LOCOG have sent out the permits via 3rd! class post and they should be arriving sometime soon.
It would have been nice if there had been clarification on the council and LOCOG parking permit sites with regards to this as soon as they didn’t meet the over optimistic promise of delivering the permits within 5 days of applying. But that’d be too easy and helpful, whilst also admitting incompetence.
Anyhow, if said visitor permits don’t turn up by the 27th of July I’m printing the Resident Permit Confirmation pdf I’ve received and displaying it in any visitors’ cars, as I’d already planned to do, and was further advised to do by Greenwich Council Parking services.

Your idea of copying the letter is a good one; thanks for the suggestion
M Allen says
After an exasperated email to Greenwich council last Monday I got a lovely reply saying that my permit had definately been “exported” and that I would receive it in 5 days. I therefore assume that it was sent to India for printing and then on to China for posting 🙂 Monday 9th and its still not here!
Ashling says
Wow, where I live in Greenwich (without controlled parking) we were only informed for the first time about the controlled zones on the 23rd June 2012!
I tried to register on the web site but found it totally useless, so had to phone up. I mentioned the problems with the web site and was informed that a large number of complaints had been received about it.
Given the amount of money that has been wasted on the Olympics, I would have expected LOCOG to have employed someone with Human Factors experience to produce the design & text for the web site – obviously my expectations were too high, as it looks like it was cobbled together last minute dot com.
I also raised the question of the cut-off date for applications which is the 14th July; what are those who work away on-site / abroad for weeks at a time supposed to do when they arrive home to discover their vehicle has been removed? They couldn’t answer that.
Given that we are only weeks away from this fiasco, what are those who have holidays booked supposed to do? Cancel them to await their permit?
Incompetence doesn’t begin to describe this utter shambles.
PRB says
Love the response M Allen, it made me burst out laughing. However, there is probably an element of truth in this. Possibly what they call snail post.
Someone mentioned that once they were registered in Hackney, they were able to download their permits off of the internet / cyber screen or something. Whatever it was, they have their permits. If I got it correct, Hackney have certainly used their common sense and evelated stress for their residents.
DeeBee says
Ordered passes on 20 June, still not here. Spoke with them today and was told that all passes will be posted today. Would be interested to hear if anyone has been told differently.
Krista Partridge says
I was beginning to wonder if I’d just been unlucky…..I rang on Tuesday 12th June (I figured they’d be snowed under on the first day) and eventually gor through, having been given a number to ring by the council’s contact centre. I made enquiries about whether a permit was needed (the map wasn’t overloaded with relevant detail, although the different colours were pretty) and was assured that, as I indeed needed a permit, someone would ring me back. Did they fairycakes. So the next day I tried again, was given a completely different number to call, a totally different reference number, and told I would receive some communication by email. This did arrive, but registered on my home computer as gobbldeygook. Luckily, the computer at work was able to print off the letter. I have a reference number, but no permit. When I rang to enquire, i was informed that they were “exported” on 18th June, which I think means sent to the printers. Surely they anticipated matters sufficiently to have the printers lined up and ready to go? We’ve seen this coming since 2005. My heart sankwhen I first heard that London had won the bid, and little since then has failed to confirm my suspicions. I suppose I feel a little bit better knowing that there are others in the same boat – but just let them try fining me if the permit isn’t here on time……..

I live in an area having temporary parking restrictions but am having real difficulty getting a permit as we have a company car (which is provided as part of my remuneration package). My application was rejected even though I provided a letter from my employer, and they DIDN’T tell me. It was only when I looked at the site I found out I had been rejected – apparently my employer didn’t give a good enough reason for why I need to have a company car kept at my address.
aaaaarrggggggghhhhhh – this could mean I am unable to park outside my home or anywhere in the area.
I am currently fighting this but who knows…..!!!!

Have received permits!! Not sure which one to use as they have given two for my car? Anyone got an idea?
Alex says
It seems that they have all dropped on the mat today – everyone I have spoken to has received 2 for their (one) car and 4 visitors permits, so double what we applied for. Absolutely no explanation in the covering letter, shall ask for an explanation tomorrow, but doubt I shall get a reply. Also, and I know it is picky, but my English teacher would be spinning in her grave. Letter addressed to Dear Ms …. and finished off with Yours faithfully…… when we all know it should be Yours sincerely. More proof, if any was needed, that they don’t know what they are doing!

We have also recieved two permits per car. The second one is a replacement permit which I assume is in case the first is mislaid. We also have eight visitors permits for this one household. I was under the impression that the allocation would be two per household. We have households in this street with three or more cars – so how many visitors permits have been issued
Andy says
Got mine today as well. Got a resident permit along with a replacement one and four visitors permits.
Was starting to get worried!
Linda Le Merle says
With reference to the Greenwich Olympic CPZ parking permit which I have now received, I am trying to find out for sure that this will enable me to park in any of the blue areas of the Greenwich RBPPA. The wording on my permit is simply “Existing CPZ”. In the zone where I live there are no shops: can I park in any of the other zones within the RBPPA which are coloured blue on the map I was sent, to do my shopping and use other facilities? I don’t want to find that the permit only allows me to park outside my own house in my own zone. I’ve tried to get an answer from London 2012 info@enquiries, but the email is returned to me. Does anyone have the definitive answer?
Andy says
Mine only says “Existing CPZ”. There doesn’t seem to be anything on the permit that relates to the zone I’m currently restricted to other than the car reg. I can’t imagine traffic wardens checking your reg against your current zone?!
Alex says
I have been trying to get an answer all day, and nobody seems to care or know. However, if you take a logical approach – assuming that Existing CPZ stands for Existing Car Parking Zone, I seem to remember that you are supposed to display it next to your normal residents permit (which is zoned) then it makes sense. HOWEVER, should you, like me, live in an area of Greenwich that has no parking restrictions then they have sent me the wrong permit – it should have been and EDZ, an Event Day Zone! This reminds me of when my drains erupted, I knew more about plumbing then than I wanted to know – I now seem to know more about parking permits than I ever thought I would need – this is taking over my life as I dont want a £1,000 parking fine.
Linda says
I have just spent 30min trying to find web site Have now found site to be told my street dose not come in the controlled area, funny that as we have the signs at the top of my road. The only option is to try and phone them, wish me luck.
Linda L. says
The July 14th Linda is not the same as the July 13th Linda – me! Alex, did you make any headway in the plumbing – sorry, parking – problem? Can you and i park anywhere, or do we have to keep our cars indoors?
Alex says
The more (local) people I talk to the more confused I am getting, as part of where I live is controlled and part uncrontrolled they have issued the same permits. I am therefore assuming that all parking wardens (and possibly the army now) will be issued with little handheld widgets that can automatically scan the little silver square on the permit. Immediately an answer will flash back from some underground £10 million data centre that I am legally parked. However, pigs could also fly. I have therefore decided to display both the parking permit and a visitors permit (as they sent me 4) in the hope that I can get on with normal daily life. Anyway, if the lovely army chappies currently camping on the heath with their surface to air missiles miss, it won’t matter anyway as we shall all be blown to kindom come. I don’t think they bother with permits up there!
Mrs D Andrews says
I am trying to find out how to register for visitors parking permits, during the Olympics, butit is very difficult to find the website.
Alex says
Try http://www.2012gamesparkingpermits.com then pour yourself a large brandy, put your feet up and be prepared to wait! Would be really interest to know if you get your parking permit prior to the start of the games!
Pau says
I had to call up to get the Visitors’ permits – altho I re-registered my existing permit on the site, which you have to do first, the option to add visitors permits on the site didn’t seem available. They’re surprisingly helpful on the phone.
Andy says
Just so you know, a neighbour called them the other day as despite registering, they didn’t have their permits yet. The bloke on the phone said that even if you don’t have your permits if you get a ticket all you need to do is call them and they can see you have registered and will waive the fine.
Obviously only good for residents parking, not visitor.
Alex says
I am sure that is true Andy, but honestly we shouldn’t have to go to all the bother. Afer all they have known about this for a number of years now – can you imagine the logjam of waiving fines, doesn’t bear thinking about
Andy says
No I agree with you – just thought it would put some people’s minds at rest if they haven’t got their permits yet.
Tilly says
I think I am getting everyone’s permits. Latest count is 2 for my car and 12 visitors ones!
Faye says
Well we are having an absolute nightmare!! We live on Plumstead Common Road and have never recived any communication at all suggesting that we need to apply for a parking permit. However over th elast week or so controlled parking zone signs have gone up outside our house and surrounding streets.
Due to the zebra crossing right outside our house, a T junction and numerous zig zags we can not park outside our house anyway and have to park around the corner in Ennis Road. We have done this for the last 12 years!
Yesterday we noticed ” Tow away zone signs” in Ennis Road so have been on the website to apply for a permit. When we type in our postcode it comes back saying we do not need a permit!
We have also called the local council who have said the same but cannot help us with our parking issue of having to park round the corner and as our actual address does not fall into the parking zone can not and will not issue us with a parking permit!
This is disgraceful as I am 4 months pregnant and have a little boy who is 15 months old…. The suggestion is that we will have to park 5-10 minute walk away outside of the parking restriction zone!
Greenwich Council- Get your act together!!
Linda L. says
Hot from the press – hold tight and try to carry on! I have just been told by Greenwich in response to my query of July 13th – see above:
“Your LOCOG issued permit stating “Existing CPZ” has been issued in error and is not valid.
LOCOG will be writing to you and others who have received incorrect permits to apologise, provide a correct permit for one Zone only, the Zone in which you reside. I reget that Games Time parking permits for businesses and residents are restricted to a single Zone however, within the new temporary Zones vehicles may generally park for 2 hours without restriction which has been provided to enable local people to park while shopping etc in these areas.
Letters are expected to be issued from LOCOG by the weekend.”
What on earth does “may generally park” mean? What a farce!
I commiserate with Faye. I applied for a renewal of my husband’s Blue Badge and now, five weeks later, have been told that as his is a discretionary award, he must be reassessed by a physiotherapist, and the earliest appointment is in mid-August. So, all in all, with an 86 year-old husband who cannot walk and a car I can’t park, I’ve kind of gone off the Olympics.

I too recieved the wrong permits with no zone area printed but I rang the parking office in woolwich and have been assured that if I dont hear about a replacement this will mean they are not issuing new ones and to go ahead and use them .
Alex says
I just read the same article as Mark in the GreenwichTime – phoned the help (?)line this morning to be told..”all permits that have been issued are invalid and new ones will be issued”… I asked when and the guy said “before the Olympics start”. So 7 days to go, do we think that we can use the current ones we have been issued just in case the correct ones don’t arrive in time? Remember they told us that they were being sent out by 3rd class post (which was obviously a new invention in itself) the first time. Also what happens to the poor buggers who have put the permit in their car and gone on holiday?
Nikki Redmond says
Have been on the same path/route/phone/email as everyone else re permits. I have just spent the most glorious 5mins of laughing so much that I could barely read out the posts to my family. How wonderful that there are so many droll citizens of Greenwich. I particularly loved Alex’s post Jly 15th 3.56. Is anyone going to watch the torch whizz by up Westcombe Hill? Think Mara’s might be open for lovely coffee – with any luck. Great forum!
