A NEW website has gone live so that Greenwich residents can plan for parking this summer during the Olympics.
Parking restrictions are to be put in place on all roads near the Olympic venues, including roads that aren’t subject to parking controls, to prevent spectators from driving to the games.
Residents with existing parking car parking permits will continue to be able to use them, but Greenwich Council’s visitor permits (pictured right) can’t be used between 27th July and 9th September.
New 2012 Games Parking visitors’ permits will have to be applied for instead, with each household being allowed to apply for two.
Any residents who currently parks a car in an area where there is no controlled parking will need to apply for a free parking permit to continue doing so throughout the summer. Paid parking bays will continue as normal throughout the Olympics.
Get more info, and register for permits, by visiting 2012gamesparkingpermits.com

GORN says
Do you know why they are needed?
chris says
and while i understand that If we get a ticket we should go through the appeal system and it will be dropped….why should we have to??!! This whole situation should have been sorted a long time ago. And what if my car gets towed away?? They need to sort this out pronto……
Andy says
Chris, have you tried to contact LOCAG since then? Have you called the 0300 number to confirm your registration?
Recommend you call 0300 111 2012 and seek advice.
In the meantime if you received an email with a registration number, write it down and stick it in the window of your car ASAP.
chris says
yep rang them today…..and was told that i should have got it…..on telling them that the last 3 times i’ve phoned up i’ve been told the same thing and was getting sick of it they changed their tune. I spoke to their supervisor and all i got was ‘it’s on it’s way’ which is the same thing ive been told every day…..ive not had any email form them during the whole process but every time i ring then confirm to me that my car is registered……its listed on the website as registered as well…..

Got my revised ticket yesterday to find that I can no longer use my car outside of zone c unless I can find a parking meter. So Sunday’s when I drive up to the heath for an early morning run then stop for breakfast & stroll round the farmers market I can no longer unless I can find a meter in the village. Or go to the Standard to do some shopping unless I can get into M&S carpark then tough. What is going on, why this ristriction on our movement, we should be able to travel within the borough. Ahhhhh I am so angry….

I don’t understand that. Whnere else would you park in the Standard apart from one of the three car parks (M&S, Royal Standard, Old Dover Road)?
Are you saying that you used to have some soprt of permit to park elsewhere? I live in the Standard and have no such thing for anywhere in the borough.
Sue says
My permit arrived yesterday! Very pleased! The Greenwich Council website does say that in the temporary event zones that, as before, there is still free parking up to 2hrs. In my area I have never seen so few cars parked and currently there is plenty of parking space available.

Still no permit! Getting complacent, losing interest in life, about to tear up my driving licence ……

I have complained so many times I am on first name terms with just about everyone at the LOCOG Parking Permit Department! I got my replacement permits on Monday although I really don’t know why they bothered – no cars on the roads, plenty of parking places and literally loads of cars in my street with no permits whatsoever! Plus, after all the hype still no golds for Team GB!!
chris says
still no permits……..i give up….
chris says
just phoned them up….apparently there is now a department to get the permits out as fast as possible………they on a permanent coffee break or something??
Linda L. says
Chris – I’m sorry you’re still waiting because mine finally arrived today – one resident’s permit and 2 visitor’s permits, which is what we were originally told to expect. Like Alex I’ve made myself a thorough nuisance in various departments, but this has been like all the bureaucratic juggernauts – it won’t be hurried and never takes the blame. However, I found a couple of people who spoke sense at Greenwich – they both signed themselves as:
Interim Income Manager
Parking Services
Royal Borough of Greenwich. Maybe they can help if you still have no joy?
GORN61 says
Why do we need these, though? Are we not allowed to park on our own property without them?
Linda L. says
It’s a long story, and as others have pointed out, the roads seem so empty now you wonder why! This link was a starting point back in June when we started applying for resident’s and visitor’s permits:
https://www.2012gamesparkingpermits.com/greenwich/home/
Without the permits which show you are a local resident, although you could park on your own property you and your visitors might not have been able to park in the usual on-road places in Greenwich you use now because the signage and time zones were being changed during the Olympics, partly to prevent people from outside the borough driving in and using up the parking spaces used by residents.

Also, Gorn, if the “unadopted” road you live in is the one I think it is, it is also in a wider zone than the road itself, so the parking permit would allow you to park in the roads around that one, whereas without it you could only park for up to two hours on most of those roads. It all depends on what your usual parking habits are – if you only stay in the unadopted road or in shop car parks, you wouldn’t need the permit.
Shirley says
As I said above, I’ve now finally got my Residents Permit, but FYI – guess what? London 2012 are finally getting round to responding to the emails I sent them complaining that I’d applied for a permit and still hadn’t received it. Here’s what their email said (if I was still permitless this would’ve sent me NUTS):
“Thank you for contacting London 2012 about Games time parking permits.
We can confirm that you can apply for a Games Time Parking permit and receive further information by accessing the following link:
https://www.2012game sparkingpermits.com/generic/
We hope this email answers your queries, if you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact us.”
Total b*%@ocks.

Just spent a few days house-sitting for a friend who provided the official visitors’ permits for us, but got ticketted today because we knew nothing of the “invalid” permits. We have not been opening our friend’s mail, so we were not aware of the reissue. Parking warden was shown the letter which indicates that the vehicle was parked in the correct zone, but still have to “appeal.” Gross cock-up – like having empty seats in the arenas.

Nigel, we all KNEW this was going to happen. People go on holiday and then have no idea that LOCOG have c####d up. Of course you are not going to open your freinds mail. It’s going to be a pain to appeal but obviously you will win. But that isn’t the point, you shouldn’t have to go through all the grief. I think a little bit of compensation is in order!!

I’d imagine that just about any ticket issued in this area would be cancelled on appeal considering the conflicting info. For more help. see: http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/reclaim/parking-ticket-appeals

I have been issued with 2 parking tickets since Friday. The new A17 visitors permit was clearly displayed. Greenwich website states that existing visitors permits will not be valid.
The information is definitely conflicting.
I have appealed both tickets, but will no dought

Perhaps you parked outside your parking zone – for example if your permit is valid (ie where you live) in, say, West Greenwich, it doesn’t allow you to park in East Greenwich, Charlton, Blackheath Standard etc. All the areas are still zoned as they were before the Olympics.

Hi,
Parked where permit allows; I even used the reference issued by Greenwich while awaiting the residents permit as I have changed my car. Hence resident permit not valid due to new car registration so had to use visitors permit.
Greenwich website clearly states existing visitors permits will not be
valid.
Totally bemused!

Hi ,
I was parked on my road in Plumstead, I did notice that those using the new permit only got tickets like myself. Whereas those still using their existing wing permits didn’t receive tickets.
I wouldn’t mind but I used the permits issued to me as the first lot were Incorrect as it stated existing zone.
I have now forwarded my appeal emails to Greenwich Parking.

What a poor example of efficiency.I registered my vehicle on 20/6/12 and had to leave the country.my partner was still in the country until the 12/7/12 and no sign of any permits.Ive just been informed by a friend that I have a penalty notice on the car and it could be clamped and then towed.I won’t be back until 13/8/12.Cant wait to get back!Just what I needed! Thanks a lot Greenwich council.

Back on July 29th Alex suggested that the lovely Rob who hosts this site should “print off all the posts and fight the buggers on court”. Now that the inevitable is happening and people are getting tickets through no fault of their own hasn’t that moment come? Trouble is, I don’t know who the lovely Rob is.
Alex says
I love the lovely Rob (who ever he is) – and I personally would like to thank him for hosting such an informative site. Just click on the other local issues he covers. All one needs to do, if your car has been towed away or ticketed is tell LOCOG?Greenwich that that they got it wrong from day one – they know!!! They don’t have a leg to stand on and refer them to this site which has recorded on a day to day basis, sometimes minute by minute, the problems that we have all had. But above all of this…. haven’t team GB done well .

where are you Emma ? you can borrow mine but mine is A17 OC which I think is sort of the Glyndon area in plumstead if that is any help but would need it back as have family coming down for parlympics
Kayleigh says
When are they taking these things down its frustrating that I cannot even take the kids to the park or visit family without having to apply for serval visitors permits even though I live 10 minutes away! They were quick enough to put them up!
Alex says
There are three chaps outside my house right now taking the signs down – one to unscrew them, one to hold the ladder and one to……..check health and safety? hold the screws? make the tea? Either way the signs are going! Anyhow, the date on the signs has passed so its perfectly ok to park where you used to without getting a ticket.
GORN61 says
So, is this permits nonsense all over now, and I can throw away the three sets I got but never used?
Barbara says
I have to say when I arrived home tonight to find my road full of vans & dodgy old cars. I almost wished for the parking permits back!! – only almost 😉
