New student housing proposed in East Greenwich

December 23, 2011 By Rob Powell

A DEVELOPER has applied for planning permission to build new student accommodation in East Greenwich.

The 49-bed,  five-storey block is proposed in Denham Street, just off Woolwich Road. The site was previously used as  a depot and offices for Lewis Coaches.

The developer hopes to benefit from requirement for student homes from both the University of Greenwich and Ravensbourne College.

A letter from the University of Greenwich submitted with the application confirms they have “unsatisfied demand for student accommodation” in the vicinity of their campus at the Old Royal Naval College.

The applicant behind the scheme is Mr David Purewall of Greenwich. It is proposed that the site be used as a car wash until the planning decision for the student accommodation is reached.

Ravensbourne students to showcase talent at Penrose Market

December 1, 2010 By Rob Powell

Students from Ravensbourne College are planning a special market in December to showcase their creative talent.

Penrose Market will feature a range of products designed by the students at the college, which recently moved to its impressive new building next to the O2 arena.

The market will include bespoke jewellery, chess piece cruet sets, vintage clothing, hand crafted cards, flat packed 3D decoration sets and plenty more one-off Christmas gift ideas you won’t find elsewhere.

Penrose Market will be held inside and outside of the Ravensbourne building in Penrose Way at the Greenwich Peninsula on December 15th from 2pm until 6:30pm, and the organisers that if the event goes well, this could be the first of a number of market events put on by the students.

Mayor of London visits new Ravensbourne College

November 5, 2010 By Rob Powell

Boris Johnson

The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, visited the new Ravensbourne College next to the O2 this morning.

The Mayor met with students, staff and business leaders from the creative industries and was given a tour of the college’s state of the art facilities.

In his short speech to invited guests, Boris praised the “amazing” college, describing it a “beautiful, beautiful building.” He credited Michael Heseltine for “initiating the transformation… of this patch of ground in North Greenwich”.

Boris also commented on the new cable car proposal which would connect the O2 with the Royal Docks, saying it would be “named after Vince Cable” and would allow him to “reflect on the importance of the banks” from high above the Thames.

Leader of Greenwich Council, Councillor Chris Roberts, paid “huge tribute” to Robin Baker for his leadership during the college’s move to Greenwich Peninsula and praised the “completely new and revolutionary ways of learning and teaching” on offer at the college.

Ravensbourne director, Robin Baker OBE, pointed out that this was not an opening but one of a series of events to celebrate with stakeholders, to which the Mayor replied that he was happy to declare “the college even more open than it was a few moments ago.”
