British Music Experience
British Music Experience at the O2 – From March 2009

The British Music Experience is a new permanent exhibition at the O2 arena’s Bubble exhibition space. Using cutting edge audio and visual displays, it will celebrate the last 60 years of British music, including pop, rock and dance music.

It offers seven distinct zones showcasing different eras in British music since 1945. It’s a great opportunity explore the best of Brit music since the end of World War II up until the present day.  There’s also the chance to play instruments yourself and some awesome artefacts such as David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust costume and Noel Gallagher’s Union flag guitar.

The British Music Experience is now open, and is a great day out for the family. Tickets cost £15 for adults, £12 for kids with special prices available for family tickets and concessions for the disabled/unemployed.

Tide Mill Discovered in Greenwich

February 18, 2009 By Rob Powell

Archaelogists from the Musuem of London have discovered the remains of a tidal water mill at Greenwich Wharf, dating back 800 years.

The medieval structure, which has apparently been well preserved for the best part of a millennium, would have included a large water wheel on the Greenwich shoreside, with a diameter of 5 metres.

Staff from the Musuem of London’s Archaeology Department have been working alongside local company, Erith Contractors, to excavate the site with key features being moved to York Archaeological Trust for conservation and research work.

Simon Davis, Contract Manager for Museum of London Archaeology, said: ‘Tide mills may have been numerous along the Thames foreshore in the early medieval period. Four mills in Greenwich are mentioned in the Domesday book of 1086 and over 6000 mills were recorded across the country at this time. However, little evidence of mills in use in the early medieval period has been found on archaeological sites, so the discovery of a 12th century tide mill at Greenwich is very significant and exciting. Detailed recording of the find following its excavation and dismantling by the Museum of London Archaeology field team will enhance our understanding of milling technologies and early medieval economies.’

The discovery was made on the development site for Lovells Wharf.

Monopoly Competition: Yellow Squres

February 18, 2009 By Rob Powell

There’s another three entries in our Monopoly competition up for grabs here. This time we are deciding the yellow squares from the original London Monopoly. Those squares are Leicester Square, Coventry Street and Piccadilly.

To enter, simply state the name of the square and the Greenwich equivalent that you’d like to nominate. e.g.:
Coventry Street = Creek Road (for example!).

You can nominate one, two or all three squares. Keep an eye on the Competition summary page which tells you all the Greenwich Streets that have been used up already.

If you nominations are selected, you will receive an entry for each one into the Greenwich Monopoly Prize Draw. Your entry doesn’t need to be unique – if someone posts the same suggestions you were going to make, you both still receive a prize draw entry if that one is selected.

Deadline for this one is Friday 12am. If you’re unclear of how to play, please just ask.

Saw this rather sorry looking lump of snow in Greenwic Park last week and thought I’d get a picture. Will it be the last of the snow for this year?
