Deighton told the meeting – held at Indig02, part of the O2 Arena – that LOCOG are “making provision so that the park is restored to how it was in the first place.”.

The next phase of the LOCOG consulation will be an exhibition from Monday to Friday this week at the Greenwich Tourist Information Centre at 46 Greenwich Church Street.

Equestrian Events To Stay At Greenwich Park

November 20, 2008 By Rob Powell

London 2012’s Olympic Board has issued a statement confirming that it will not be making changes to the staging of the Equestrian and Modern Pentathlon events which are due to take place in Greenwich Park. The decision comes after they received the findings of KPMG’s review in to the Olympic venues.

The statement says:

* None of the alternatives identified by LOCOG and considered by KPMG are in a location which is close enough to accommodate the Modern Pentathlon show jumping event which needs to be located close to the Olympic Park to allow the completion of all five events within one day;
* Any move away from Greenwich would therefore result in a doubling up of facilities with the need to build a separate Modern Pentathlon show-jumping facility close to the Olympic Park;
* In addition, all of the alternative venues would also require the funding of additional accommodation as they are not within IOC guidelines for travel time from the Olympic Village;
* Given these considerations, an alternative location for equestrian and modern pentathlon would not result in lower costs than Greenwich Park.

Maritime Museum – Catch It Whilst You Can

October 28, 2008 By Rob Powell

A new book titled “500 Places to See Before They Disappear” has listed the National Maritime Museum as a visitor attraction worth seeing before it’s destroyed by climate change.  The sensationalist claim from author Holly Hughes urges readers to visit the museum and other London landmarks such as the Tower of London before they are lost forever, with rising water levels and sinking land fingered as the likely culprits.

A representative of Visit London suggested that the Thames Barrier will be protecting the apparently under threat attractios for generations to come – Read more on the BBC website.

The owners, AEG, has been granted permission for another 19,000 sq m of leisure or sports space, and 5,000 sq m for food and drink outlets. The expansion, which would grow the development by 39%, could see the addition of a new theatre, comedy club or some other large visitor attraction.

Greenwich Council Unaffected By Icelandic Bank Collapse

October 13, 2008 By Rob Powell

The turmoil affecting the financial markets has had a devastating effect on Iceland. The collapse of its leading banks has left many UK councils, charities and organisations exposed as they had taken advantage of good savings rates and deposited their money abroad.

The good news for Greenwich residents is that the council has issued a statement saying that Greenwich Council had no savings in Icelandic bank, Landsbanki.

Other councils were not so lucky, with reports suggesting that over 100 authorities had Icelandic accounts, with some even using them to deposit money earmarked for employee salaries.

Cutty Sark Fire Was Accident, Police Say

September 30, 2008 By Rob Powell

Last year’s fire at the Cutty Sark was an accident according to a police investigation. An official report has revealed that an industrial vacuum cleaner had been left on for two days prior to the fire, which took place in May 2007 whilst the ship was undergoing restoration and repair.

The incident was originally thought to be “suspicious” by the Police and much time was spent studying CCTV footage to trace people and vehicles seen in the area at the time. The fire added a 12 month delay to the tea clipper’s restoration and required an additional £10million funding.

It had been feared that the ship was beyond repair but fortunately much of the hulk had been removed from the site as part of the restoration. Following the fire, the Cutty Sark Trust faced a huge funding black hole, but their fundraising was accelerated and in July of this year, shipping magnate Sammy Ofer made a £3.3 million donation to get the project back on track.
