Greenwich Lights Up

November 25, 2008 By Rob Powell

Greenwich Lights Up, December 5th from 3pm, Greenwich Market

See the Christmas lights in Greenwich get switched on by the cast of Greenwich Theatre’s “Jack In The Beanstalk” on Friday December 5th. The fun starts at Greenwich Market at 3pm, and then at 4pm a magical lantern procession will make its way from the Old Royal Naval College along to the market, via the Cutty Sark Gardens Christmas Tree of Light.

Mayor of Greenwich Cllr Steve Offord, will then join the panto cast for the official switch on at 4.30pm.

In anticipation of the event, the Mayor said, “Greenwich Lights Up is always amongst the borough’s most popular festive events and I’m sure it will prove to be a great occasion as always. On a personal note, it will be a great honour for me to join the cast of ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ to help switch on the Greenwich Market Christmas Lights and I would like to encourage everyone to make the effort to come down and enjoy the start of the wonderful festive season in Greenwich.”

Santa will be in his grotto in Greenwich market from noon to 7pm, with a gift for every child.

Are you going to the switch on? Greenwich.co.uk has a £10 Amazon gift voucher for the best photo or video from the switch on. Email entries to the editor.

Monkey: Journey To the West at the O2

November 13, 2008 By Rob Powell

Remember Monkey? The cult Japanese show made a reappearance on our screens this Summer when the characters were used in the BBC’s Olympics coverage. The story of the show was based on a famous Chinese book from the 16th century called Journey To The West.

This vibrant new opera is an adaption of that story by Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett, who previously collaborated on the Gorillaz concept band. This dazzling spectacle brings together traditional disciplines – acrobatics, singing, dancing – with modern technology including animation and video projections.

It’s being performed in a purpose built tent at the O2 complex in North Greenwich, and even features a Monkey themed restaurant. It runs until December 5th and tickets are available from Ticketmaster.

WWE Smackdown at the O2 Arena

November 1, 2008 By Rob Powell

WWE Smackdown, O2 Arena, Monday 10th November 2008

We just had the Moscow State Circus in Greenwich and now another type of circus rolls into town as Vince McMahon’s WWE comes to the O2 Arena in North Greenwich. Wrestling superstars you can expect to see are Triple H, The Undertaker, The Big Show, The Great Khali, Jeff Hardy, MVP, Michelle McCool and Maria.

Tickets are available from Ticketmaster are available in 3 price tiers, costing £30, £40 and £50.

I wonder if the Undertaker will be tempted to go and see some of the dead bodies at Body Worlds, or would that make it too much of a busman’s holiday?
