Meeting to discuss new Friends of St Alfege Park

March 6, 2012 By Rob Powell

A PUBLIC meeting will take place to discuss the formation of a new Friends group for St Alfege Park.

The council is holding the meeting, which will be independently chaired, at West Greenwich Library next Tuesday night and is encouraging local people who want to help with the park to get involved.

Greenwich Council refused to work with the previous group after the controversial smashing of headstones in the former churchyard.

In December the previous Friends group was still hopeful that it would be reprieved and voted to go into “hibernation” rather than formally disband. Those hopes now seem to have been dashed as the council looks to create a brand new group.

Doors open at 6.30 and the meeting will commence at 7pm on Tuesday March 13th.

Cutty Sark to reopen on April 26th

March 2, 2012 By Rob Powell

THE FAMOUS tea clipper, Cutty Sark, will re-open to the public on April 26th, it has been announced.

The re-opening comes almost five years after she was ravaged by fire during a renovation project.

Cutty Sark has been, controversially, suspended three metres in the air, creating a new public space below it for visitors. The space will also be used as a private hire space for events, creating a new revenue stream for the cash-strapped project.

With the announcement of the re-opening, the ticket prices have also been revealed: entrance for an adult to the Cutty Sark will cost £12.

Children between the ages of 5 and 15 will get in for £6.50 and kids under 5 go free with an adult and there will be deals on family tickets available.

Holders of the council’s Greenwich Card will qualify for the concessionary rate of £9.50.

It is expected that HM The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, who is the president of the Cutty Sark Trust, will attend an official opening ceremony in April.

The Cutty Sark website is now accepting online bookings.

Daily Photo: 02/03/2011 – Greenwich Pier

March 2, 2012 By Rob Powell

Photographer Tim Keeler recently sent me this picture showing the view in two different directions as you stand down by the newly redeveloped Greenwich Pier. He is unimpressed:

It could only happen in Greenwich! Having destroyed the wonderful character of the old Greenwich Pier by allowing the removal of the old pier buildings, that part of our local World Heritage site is slowly being Disneyfied in such a way that one wonders whether the planners and architects ever had the benefit of a proper education or sense of cultural heritage.

Thankfully in one direction we still have the serene beauty of the Thames river and the majestic architecture that the world comes to see in its droves. Turn around and in the other direction we have what appears to be, as someone recently said, a “1970’s primary school temporary annexe” – in fact the new ticket office and its built-in food units. Just the thing to impress tourists eh! Viewed from across the river it looks as though a giant public lavatory has been erected on the pier. A nice contrast against the backgound of the Old Royal Naval College. Christopher Wren must be turning over in his grave!

Lots of discussion of this on the Greenwich Phantom yesterday.

Update

The Phantom reports that the signage was put up without planning permission. This will now be considered by the council and ward councillor Matt Pennycook has indicated on Twitter that he thinks it should be considered by a planning committee of fellow councillors rather than officers.

Goddard’s Pies to return to Greenwich town centre

March 1, 2012 By Rob Powell

GODDARD’s Pies is to return to Greenwich with the opening of a new shop.

The family business’s new shop will be in King William Walk, replacing Greenwich Inc’s Great British Fish & Chip shop.

Goddard’s was established in Deptford by Alfred Goddard in 1890 and then for many years they had a shop in Greenwich Church Street.

Kane Goddard of Goddard’s Pies told Greenwich.co.uk: “We’ve been away far too long and we look forward to seeing some familiar faces and lots of new ones in our pieshop. 2012 is an exciting year for many reasons and we can’t wait to re-establish ourselves within the Greenwich community.”

The venue for the business is an 18th century pub, originally known as the Cricketers, and has had various incarnations in recent years such as the W Lounge, Powder Monkey and Lani Tiki.

The shop should open for business in April after a refit that’s expected to take around three weeks to complete.

Costs of royal borough branding revealed by council

March 1, 2012 By Rob Powell

OVER £80,000 has so far been spent in the rebranding of Greenwich as a royal borough.

The figures were revealed last night in a written answer at the full meeting of Greenwich Council.

New borough boundary signs cost £21,800, although the council says the previous signs were “dilapidated” and their replacement was delayed until the new royal borough status was bestowed to make the change “as cost effective as possible.”

Royal borough banners on lampposts in the town centres cost £41,400 to install and £19,000 has been spent on replacing street signs in selected areas.

The three nights of fireworks that took place to mark the occasion cost £32,500 to stage, although an undisclosed amount was contributed towards this by sponsors.

Freedom of the Royal Borough

Councillors have agreed to hold special meetings later this month where the Freedom of the Borough will be awarded to Neville Lawrence OBE and Doreen Lawrence OBE, parents of the murdered teenager Stephen Lawrence.

The honour will also be given to the Duke of Edinburgh, who is also Baron Greenwich, Judy Smith MBE, George Reynolds OBE and Father Michael Scanlon.

Previous recipients who were given the award by the London Borough of Greenwich will be invited to accept the re-affirmation of their Freedom of the Royal Borough of Greenwich.

This video to mark the celebrations was published by the council.

Council tax frozen at first Royal Borough council meeting

March 1, 2012 By Rob Powell

COUNCILLORS voted through a budget at a full meeting of the council last night which will see council tax frozen again.

It’s the fifth consecutive year that council tax has been frozen in the borough.

In presenting the budget, the Leader of the Council, Cllr Chris Roberts, said there remained “ticking time-bombs” and warned that government policies on housing benefit caps would see many families moving to Greenwich from other boroughs, adding pressure to local services.

He lashed out at cuts by the government, describing the Conservatives as “vicious, nasty and spiteful.” Their Lib Dem coalition partners were “spineless,” he added.

The Leader of the Opposition, Cllr Spencer Drury, said Cllr Roberts was too focussed on Westminster politics and had “taken his eye off the ball” in Greenwich.

Cllr Drury called on the council to drop parking charges on the borough’s high streets and reduce what it spent on full time union employees.

The full council meeting at Woolwich Town Hall was the first since the borough was bestowed with royal status.

Light at the end of the foot tunnel

It was revealed at the meeting that the lifts in Greenwich Foot Tunnel should be operational by the end of March. The council has replaced the main contractor on the refurbishment “following severe delays to the programme.”

Cllr Denise Hyland, in charge of regeneration, said the cleaning of the tunnel’s interior walls would be the last thing to be done and she expected it to look “splendid” upon completion.

So Organic closes Greenwich shop

February 29, 2012 By Rob Powell

So Organic, Greenwich

A SHOP in Greenwich town centre that specialises in organic skincare products has closed down.

So Organic in Nelson Road shut its doors at the weekend and the owners plan to reopen the shop in Lincoln instead.

Chief Operating Officer, Stuart Burlton, told Greenwich.co.uk that the closure was because of the “reduction in customer footfall in the area, and the knock on effect this has had on retail sales.”

He added, “We leave behind a group of excellent and loyal employees, a beautiful shop, loyal customer base and, to be fair, a supportive landlord in Greenwich Hospital.”

The increase in the cost of parking in Greenwich town centre is one factor that So Organic’s owners believe has put shoppers off visiting Greenwich.

Customers with treatment room vouchers will receive a refund on application, either in full or in part if bought as part of a series of vouchers, depending on how many they had used as a proportion of the overall. Customers will also have the choice to exchange them for product vouchers on So Organic’s website, which continues to trade as normal.

Olympic rings on Thames mark 150 days to go

February 29, 2012 By Rob Powell

Olympic Rings - Greenwich

A SET of Olympic rings were towed down the Thames this afternoon to mark 150 days until the start of the games.

The structure, 11m tall and 25m wide, was towed down river, stopping for photo opportunities at the Old Royal Naval College, the O2 and the Thames Barrier before turning around and heading back.

The rings, which are reported to have cost more than £930,000, sailed through the lifted Tower Bridge at lunch time and reached Greenwich shortly before 3pm.

They were launched on their journey by London mayor, Boris Johnson, who used the occasion to announce a series of free cultural events in London this summer.

He said:

“From museums to theatre, and music to design, we have a reputation that is second to none and London’s finest artists and organisations are producing an exceptional range of brand new cultural events that will add to the excitement of hosting the Games.

“We’re creating the biggest festival of outdoor arts ever to be seen in the capital, as well as fantastic new work that will throw new light on some of our city’s lesser known landmarks and hidden gems. Wherever you are you will feel a part of the 2012 celebrations and experience a summer like no other in one of the most exciting cities on earth.'”

Masterplan for future Greenwich Peninsula development revealed

February 23, 2012 By Rob Powell

THE COUNCIL’S vision for how Greenwich Peninsula might look in the future has been unveiled.

A “masterplan” has been put out for consultation, and would help guide developments on the western side of Greenwich Peninsula for years to come.

The document looks at ways the potential for undeveloped land on the western side of the peninsula can be unlocked.

A standout feature of the plans, first revealed by 853, is a new multi-use entertainment complex with a capacity of 40,000.

The complex could also include an integrated university faculty and the document also suggests a dedicated sporting facility, such as a new permanent home for the Soccerdome and possibly one of the large structures that has been built for the shooting events on Woolwich Common.

The document says: “The huge potential of the site lies in its riverside location with spectacular views over Canary Wharf to the north east and Greenwich, the World Heritage site, to the south.”

You can see the masterplan in full here – a consultation on the plans will remain open until March 9th.

The plans, along with a consultation, can be seen in person at presentations this afternoon and on Saturday morning at the Forum.

Masterplans have also been published for Eltham Town Centre, Charlton Riverside and Woolwich Town Centre.
