I joined about a dozen other people on a fascinating guided tour around East Greenwich yesterday morning. Our guide was historian and storyteller, Rich Sylvester (pictured above), who was behind the recent East Greenwich History Map.
Daily Photo: 20/07/2010 – Jersey Tiger
Thanks to regular contributor Indigo for this picture of a moth that was seen on a wall at the junction of Woolwich Road and Farmdale Road. We think it’s a Jersey Tiger.
Daily Photo: 16/07/2010 – Orange Boxes
These orange containers were a recent temporary addition to Blackheath Avenue in Greenwich Park for the performances of 3rd Ring Out. A fairly garish blot on the landscape although I did quite like the symmetry they created as you looked down at the General Wolfe statue.
Daily Photo: 13/07/2010 – Where in Greenwich is this?
A virtual slap on the back and round of applause for first person to identify whereabouts in Greenwich this photo was taken.
Update: Well done David Williams and Pedro, for correctly identifying these glass blocks as bveing on the building in Maze Hill at the corner of Woodland Crescent, which can also be seen from Trafalgar Road as Pedro says. Here’s the proof:

Nick Davison from the University of Greenwich kindly sent me this photo the Azamara Journey which he took as it passed Greenwich at the beginning of the month.
Daily Photo: 22/06/2010 – Pistachios in the Park
I took this photo of Aysin and Lizzie at Pistachios in the Park in East Greenwich Pleasaunce earlier today.
Aysin and his family started the orginal Pistachios coffee shop in Greenwich, and he is now the operations manager for the Pistachios in the Park franchises. I was pleased to read on Brockley Central that Pistachios are interested an opening a franchise in Hilly Fields, which would be good news for anyone that uses that park.
Lizzie runs the successful East Greenwich Pleasaunce franchise and here’s a salad she made today that she was particularly proud of.
Daily Photo: 18/06/2010 – The Big Society
I saw evidence of what some might call the Big Society in two forms today. The picture above (larger version), taken at the corner of Gloucester Circus and Crooms Hill, was of a gentleman dressed up in some kind of costume which was somewhere between a superhero and comedy bank robber.
I asked what it was about and apparently he wants to help people cross the road and perform other acts of kindness to draw attention to his belief that we should be more neighbourly to one another. It seemed like some kind of stunt and I think I only got half the story but if I find out any more I will share it with you. Maybe he’ll develop his ideas further and set up a free school for young superheros of tomorrow.
I found a more serious example of civic action when I met up with Sebastien Chapleau in the Bar De Musee cafe this morning. Sebastien is London Citizen’s Borough Organiser for Greenwich and Lewisham. He told me a little about their campaigns for safer streets, the Living Wage and affordable housing projects. Hopefully I’ll mention more about their activities in the future.
